Cultivating Compassionate Integrity

Erasmus+ Youth Exchange

Cultivating Compassionate Integrity

A youth exchange project promoting mindfulness, compassionate integrity, self-development and active citizenship among young people from four countries, including Bulgaria, Hungary, Serbia and Italy.

Context

According to UN young people are some of the most affected by the pandemic’s socio-economic impacts (WomenDeliver, 2020). In addition to affecting young people’s employment, learning situation, and aspirations, the Covid-19 pandemic has had profound impact on our well-being and mental health.  Young people’s development into mindful, self-aware, critical and engaged citizens is the cornerstone of this project.

When we, young people, are empowered to understand and leverage our personal strengths, and are equipped with skills to successfully manage our emotions, stress, and interpersonal relationships, as well as apply our resourcefulness and creativity to solving the most pressing social and environmental issues, we can act as change-makers, and contribute to finding sustainable and innovative alternatives.

Compassionate integrity is the ability to live one’s life in accordance with one’s values with a recognition of our common humanity. Unlike definitions of integrity that focus on mere consistency with one’s values, without examining what those values are, compassionate integrity insists that consistency with one’s values is not enough if those values promote harm to oneself, others, or the world. Maintaining and increasing consistency with one’s values is most beneficial when they are values that promote one’s own well-being, as well as that of others. We arrive at what those values are and how we understand them by investigating our needs and beliefs, using common sense, common experience, and science.

Objectives

The main objectives of the youth exchange are:

▼ to create a safe space to learn, explore and grow together

▼ to learn how to enhance our well-being through learning about and gaining experience with contemplative practices, and identifyingwhich ones work best for us

▼ to explore how the 10 skills involved in compassionate integrity can be utilized to enhance social cohesion and dialogue

▼ to develop a daily practice of reflective writing

▼ to create actionable plans how to individually and collectively share the principles and practices learnt, and organize at least 1 follow-up event per country partner
